On Earth, Ryland Grace knows how to guide a classroom through a problem. With Rocky, even counting needs a fresh explanation. Two intelligent people can agree that mathematics matters and still have to learn how the other one writes a number.

There is homework on both sides of the conversation.
Rocky brings the knowledge of another civilization into the Hail Mary. Graceâs scientific training helps him ask better questions, but it does not spare him the awkward work of being a student again. Their progress depends on explaining what each has spent a lifetime taking for granted.
The figureâs unfamiliar geometry suits that version of Grace: a recognizable human given a new visual grammar. Choose the style that belongs in your own study corner. The Buy 1 Get 1 Free offer also leaves room for the person you will want to argue through the next question with.
