THE QUIET SHIFT A FRIEND TAKES
You can sleep.Someone is here.
Grace finds it strange that Rocky wants to watch him sleep. For Rocky, leaving a sleeping friend alone is the strange thing. On Erid, deep sleep makes a person vulnerable; someone staying awake nearby is an ordinary, necessary act of care.
The room feels different when somebody keeps watch.
Understanding that habit changes the meaning of the scene. The alien watching from his enclosure is taking a turn at looking after someone. Between the urgent work of the mission, trust becomes as quiet as allowing yourself to rest while another person stays.
This Rocky gives the hard alien silhouette a soft brown plush surface. Put him beside the place where a late reading session eventually gives way to sleep. The green accents and unusual shape keep the engineer recognizable; the softer form holds onto the care in that small exchange.
